We drove the north-south length of the Pinal desert wilderness, where about the only sign of anything is a ranch or two.

We couldn't find the alleged settlements of Barkerville and Oak Wells.

(Update, 27dec01: Pinal County has -- illegally, many citizens are claiming -- approved a plan for some idiot Canadian speculators to plow under thousands and thousands of acres of pristine Sonoran desert, formerly known as Willow Springs Ranch, and turn them into a master-planned hell with over a hundred thousand people. Yep. Probably some will be Canadians, too. Yay for Pinal County and Canadian land speculators. It's not as though there aren't MILLIONS of acres of "undeveloped" land in Canada, for McKenzie's sake.)
