NBC Nightly News Bids Bye to Booth


That's because the Mojave Desert Phone Booth is gone, vanished, a victim of its own worldwide popularity. Taken not by vandals, but by the telephone company -- Pacific Bell -- and the National Parks Service.

Why?

Their official statement reads, "increased public traffic had a negative impact on the desert environment."
In other words, despite 1.6 million acres of sand, cactus, joshua trees, and snakes, too many people -- 25 to 30 a week -- were tramping way out of their way to answer the phone.
