NBC Nightly News Bids Bye to Booth


O'Neill: The desert phone was installed forty years ago, for workers in the nearby mines. The Mojave came under federal control six years ago, and has just been designated a National Park.
While there are big plans to welcome visitors, it'll be without the desert phone. Maybe it was just too noisy.

The new silence can be deafening. Perhaps the phone was just a desert mirage, now disconnected from reality.
