#04 — "I Am A Man; What Does That Mean?" (3:01)

Here is where we really begin to wade in the water, children: for, by asking I Am A Man; What Does That Mean?, this singer indicates his readiness for Jacob-like wrestling with a primary ontological query. As you undoubtedly remember, if much of your childhood was press-ganged into Sunday School or yeshiva, the patriarch Jacob lost his sciatic nerve wrestling with an angel. Our singer, however, is determined not to lose his nerve. "I shouldn't be so nervous," he sings, and as far as I'm concerned, daring to solo with a voice like that proves that this man has nerve to spare. Observe, further, how he omits the article before Father, the objects after mess with and bother, ends a line with a preposition (meet God at), and above all, how he rhymes before me with door be.

Nervy bastard.

To be honest, though, most of the wrestling in this song takes place among the singer's various whiny overdubbed efforts at harmony. Lose his nerve? Assuredly not. Lose his way? Well, let's just say this: because of Jacob, observant Jews do not eat the sciatic nerve of animals. I suggest that because of this song, no one ought to listen to this song.

I am a man; what does that mean?
That means that I have a chance to become
Like the One that I came from
There is a way before me
Not just walls, there must a door be
My every step has meaning
A strong arm's there for leaning
I've been prepared for service
I shouldn't be so nervous
I am a child of Father
Though demons try to bother
There is a time and space that
I'm destined to meet God at
Being a man is such a privilege

I am a man; what does that mean?
That means that if I fail, I can recover
There's new things to discover
What's gone before can't bind me
I can leave the past behind me
Though we reap what we have sown
Each season a new crop can be grown
I have the power to flourish
Protect, preserve, and nourish
The loved ones I've been blessed with
Though demons try to mess with
Jesus Christ, Our Lord, prevails
His power never fails
Though heaven and earth shall pass
His words shall last

I am a man; what does that mean?
That means that my weaknesses are counted
Before the battle's mounted
My Lord and Savior won't let
Me get in over my head
My enemy can't pierce
God's armor, though he's so fierce
My life is shielded by love and power divine

I am a man; what does that mean?
That means that there is no charge before me
That I cannot larger be
My God will build me up to meet the task

I am a man; what does that mean?
That means that when my life on earth is finished
A new life's just beginning
I close my eyes to time and see eternity

We are human—what does that mean?
That means that we have a chance to become
Like the One that we came from
There is a way before us
Not just walls, but we must trust
Our every step has meaning
A strong arm's there for leaning
Our lives are shielded by love and power divine
